When the body is unable to cool itself through sweating, serious heat illnesses may occur. It’s important to know the symptoms and treatment in order to work safely in hot environments.
Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Mood Changes or Irritability
- Confusions
Heat Stroke
Symptoms:
- Dry
- Pale skin with no sweating or hot
- Red skin that looks sunburned
- Mood changes or Irritability
- Confusion
- Seizures
- Unconsciousness
How to Prevent
- Drink plenty of cool water – every 15-20 minutes
- Wear light clothing in a breathable fabric
- Take brief but frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas to help your body cool down
- Perform heaviest work during the cooler part of the day – early morning or later afternoon
If you or someone else exhibits signs of heat exhaustion, contact your supervisor immediately.
If not treated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke which is a serious medical condition.
